Complete and submit the Graduate Admission Application.

  • In the online application you may submit any supplemental materials (letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, resume) that are required by the department. See Department Programs for information on a program's specific requirements.
  • Recommenders included in the application will be contacted by email, and a statement of purpose can be uploaded as an attachment. Your application may be submitted before letters of recommendations. The recommender module is separate

Important Note:  After you submit the Graduate Admission application you will receive a 10-digit USC ID typically within 2-3 days of submitting the online application. (During peak periods it may take up to 7-10 business days of submitting the online application)  You will need to include your 10-digit USC ID with all submitted materials by mail; to submit copies of transcripts via email (optional, see STEP 3), and to include in all correspondence with USC.


REQUIRED: Send official, sealed transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (with official English translations if necessary) to the address below.  We encourage you to obtain two copies of all your transcripts, one to send to USC and one for your records and to complete STEP 3 (optional).

You may submit your official transcripts by either 1) asking your undergraduate institution to send your transcripts directly to USC or, 2) obtaining the official transcripts in a sealed envelope from the university and send them to USC yourself. Please note that we do not accept transcripts uploaded through the online application.

If you have not yet completed your undergraduate degree, submit transcripts for all semesters you have completed.  After you have completed your degree, you will need to submit your complete official transcripts. We strongly recommend including the 10-digit USC ID number on your transcripts to make sure it gets attached to your application. However, if you are close to the application deadline and your USC ID is not available, transcripts can be sent with: 1) your name as it appears in the USC application, 2) your date of birth (month/day/year), 3) the email address you used in the application, and 4) the name of the program to which you are applying. Official, sealed transcripts must be received by USC (or postmarked) by the final application deadlines.

By electronic transcripts:

USC also now accepts official electronic transcripts, provided they meet the following guidelines:

  • The transcript originates from a secure site formally linked to the sending institution.
  • The school is located in the United States. We also accept electronic transcripts from India sent via TrueCopy Credentials. We do not accept electronic transcripts from any other overseas institutions or vendors.

Please instruct the vendor to email the transcript to Do not send any materials or correspondence to this email address yourself. To avoid delays, do not provide vendor with any other email.                   


OPTIONAL: Submit a digital copy of your official transcripts to:

After you submit the Graduate Admission application and obtain your 10-digit USC ID we encourage to submit copies of your official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (with official English translations if necessary).  Please include both the original language and English translations, if necessary. Please note that your official, sealed transcripts are still required to be mailed to the University by the application deadlines.

IMPORTANT: Do not open the official transcripts that are being sent to USC, these must remain sealed as you received them from the issuing institution.

  • You MUST include your 10-digit USC ID with the transcripts in the subject line as such:
    First Name (Given), Last name (Surname/Family), 10-digit USC ID number
    Excluding your USC ID will delay processing of your application.
  • Transcripts must be in PDF or JPEG format (10 MB limit).
  • Documents submitted must be copies of official transcripts. Portal or online student copies are NOT acceptable.
  • ONLY transcripts sent to this email will be accepted. Do not send resumes, LORs, certificates, degrees, etc.  Including additional documents WILL delay processing of your application.  
  • Important Note:  Please do not email with any questions or application status checks. This email address is only for submission of unofficial transcripts.  For inquiries regarding your Graduate Admission application, please contact

REQUIRED: Submit official GRE General Test scores directly from ETS. The USC ETS school code is 4852 (a department code is not necessary).

While a department code is not required, you may indicate one if necessary. The exam date needs to be within five years of the start of the intended application semester.



Submit TOEFL iBT exam or academic IELTS test scores.

Official TOEFL iBT scores must be sent directly by ETS to "U Southern Cal," ETS code 4852. While a department code is not required, you may indicate one if necessary. Official IELTS scores can be sent through IELTS by selecting USC. Additional test report forms may be requested through the testing center after you have taken the test. TOEFL iBT and IELTS scores are valid when taken within two years of the start of the intended application semester. The fall semester starts in August, and the spring semester starts in January.

While the TOEFL iBT or IELTS is a required application material, there is no minimum TOEFL iBT or IELTS score required for admission to the Viterbi School.  However, students who achieve a score of 90 or higher on the TOEFL iBT (including a minimum score of 20 in each section) OR a 6.5 on the IELTS (with a minimum score of 6 in each section) are exempt from additional language requirements if admitted to USC.

Submit the Proof of Financial Support documentation and a photocopy of the first two pages of your passport.

International students recommended for admission are required to submit proof of sufficient financial support and passport verification in order to issue an I-20. While these documents are not required for your application to be reviewed, we highly recommend that you submit them as soon as possible.

>> Special note regarding scholarship deadline: If your application and transcripts were received by the university by 12/15, or postmarked by 12/15, you will be considered for merit-based scholarships. Processing time may take at least 4 weeks. Please note, that the date that your transcripts are uploaded to your file does not reflect the date the transcripts were postmarked or received.  Graduate Admission will notify you via e-mail if additional information or materials are needed to complete our evaluation.
